Weekly Jr. Oiler

10/30/26

Here is this week's Jr. Oiler for your review!

Principal Update:

Dear Dwyer Families,

Another great week comes to an end here at Dwyer!  Certainly a highlight for me was last night's Haunted Basement.  This being my second year, again, it is such a tremendous demonstration of the Dwyer community showing up and showing out!  PTSA, JOMG, ASB, staff, student volunteers, community partners, parents, and students all coming together make this event such a success!  I can tell you is that everything that you saw that was in place took HOURS behind the scenes to pull off!!! I want to thank EVERYONE that played a part, it sounds cliche to say, but the list is just way too long and I would genuinely feel terrible forgetting someone’s name!

Next, every year the state of California releases the CA School Dashboard data that gives a summary of a school’s previous year’s performance.  For your review, I’ve linked Dwyer’s Dashboard link here.  Dwyer’s Dashboard Data can be quickly summarized here:
Academic Performance: Dwyer excels across all core subjects, earning top-tier Blue ratings in English Language Arts (47.4 points above standard) and English Learner Progress (71.8% of students making progress), along with strong Green ratings in Math (21.0 points above standard) and Science (63.1 points).
Academic Engagement: Chronic absenteeism earned a Yellow rating, standing at 14.9% overall and continuing a positive downward trend with a 0.5% decrease from the previous year.
Conditions & Climate: The school achieved a Green rating for Suspension Rate, successfully lowering suspensions to 2.9% (a 0.6% decline), reflecting a safe and supportive learning environment.

Likewise, California also releases data at the district level as well.  I am proud to share with you all that HBCSD performed very well last school year.  For your review, I’ve linked the HBCSD dashboard infographic info link here.

As you can see, there’s plenty to be proud of here at Dwyer and in HBCSD!

Have a great, safe Halloween weekend and Go Jr. Oilers!

Respectfully,

Mr. Okamoto

Counseling Corner:

Bee Kind!
Hello, students and families! For Halloween, I dressed as a bee and handed out kind stickers to remind everyone to “bee kind” all year long. Kindness can brighten someone’s day: listen to others, include people when you can, and treat others—and yourself—with care and respect. Small, thoughtful choices help make our school welcoming and supportive. If you’d like to talk, students and families are welcome to reach out to me! Here is my counseling referral form.

Warmly,

Mrs. Garcia, MS, PPSC
