The 8th grade promotion ceremony will be held on Friday, June 21, at 2 pm on the Dwyer front lawn.

The Promotion Newsletter, which is available below in both English and Spanish, contains information about promotion, dates for events leading up to promotion, and instructions on how to purchase your student’s promotion package.

Promotion Requirements

In order to receive a Certificate of Promotion or be allowed to participate in any promotional activities students must meet the following conditions:

• The student must maintain a cumulative grade point of at least 1.50 at the conclusion of the eighth grade.
• The student must have no more than 10 absences without valid excuse (deliberately stayed away from school on his/her volition) during the eighth grade.
• The student must meet all conditions of a School Attendance Review Board contract (if the student is under contract) in the eighth grade that stipulates attendance as a “conditional of promotion”.
• The student must have a clear library account by either returning all books checked out to the student (both text books and library books) or paying for the replacement value of the books checked out to the student.
• The student must have accumulated no more than 22 discipline demerits, or suspensions during their 8th grade year.

Any student who has attended less than one semester in Huntington Beach City School District will be considered for promotion by the site administration.

Each eighth grade student who is not eligible to receive a certificate of promotion or participate in any promotional activities shall conference with the student’s parent and an administrator.  A written notification shall be provided to parents explaining the reasons for the ineligibility.

Retention

Students in grades six thru eight will be retained if they have not met the District standards regarding promotion or they have not satisfied the conditions of a “conditional promotion.”  Please visit HBCSD website to view the student retention brochure, under Educational Services.

Promotion Packages Information

There are two promotion package options:

• Package One includes the promotion gown, commemorative class t-shirt, digital photo, program, and promotion event fee. The cost is $43.
• Package Two includes all of the items in Package One except for the promotion gown. If you have a black gown from a previous Dwyer promotion, you do not need to purchase a new gown and can select Package Two. The cost is $28.

You may also make optional purchases of a ribbon lei for $10 or a special message for your student which will be printed in the promotion program for $5. If you are able, you may also make a donation to sponsor another student’s promotion package.   

Please use the online Promotion Package Order Form to order and pay for your student’s promotion package. Orders are due by Monday, April 22, 2024.

A photo of your student with the principal will be taken on the promotion day. One free downloadable photo is included in the Promotion Package. The link will be sent via ParentSquare and posted here on the Dwyer website a week after the promotion.  Printed photos may be purchased from the photographer using the link for the downloadable photo.
