Shoreline Standouts
Honoring Melanie Brown, Danielle Zankich, and Diego Mata

The Huntington Beach City School District (HBCSD) is proud to recognize three extraordinary team members as our December Shoreline Standouts: Melanie Brown and Danielle Zankich from Hawes Elementary, and Diego Mata from our Grounds Department. These honorees embody excellence, compassion, and a deep commitment to our mission of empowering all learners to achieve their full potential.

Each month, the Shoreline Standouts program celebrates employees who positively influence their communities, exemplify the HBCSD Learner Profile traits, and bring the District’s focus areas to life through their work. This month’s recipients reflect the very best of HBCSD, steady leadership, student-centered care, and pride in maintaining safe, welcoming campuses.

Melanie Brown – Office Manager, Hawes Elementary

Step into the Hawes Elementary office on any given day, and you’ll see Melanie Brown balancing endless tasks with warmth, calm, and professionalism. A trusted and beloved presence on campus, Melanie is known for making families, students, and colleagues feel supported the moment they walk through the door.

Nominations for Melanie poured in this month, all highlighting her steady leadership during a year of transition, her deep knowledge of the school community, and her commitment to a supportive school environment. Colleagues shared that Melanie is “quite literally the glue that holds Hawes together” and “a kind and welcoming ambassador for Hawes and for HBCSD.”

Whether she is helping a student in need, guiding a new family, or stepping up during staff shortages, Melanie approaches every situation with grace, care, and resourcefulness. Her impact is felt across the campus as she keeps things running smoothly, fosters a positive atmosphere, and models the Learner Profile traits of Caring, Responsibility, and Self-Awareness.

Danielle Zankich – Teacher, Hawes Elementary

Known for her tremendous heart and her commitment to meeting the unique needs of every learner, Danielle Zankich is a cherished teacher at Hawes Elementary who consistently goes above and beyond for her students.

One nominator shared that Mrs. Zankich played “a huge impact in helping my son come out of his shell,” describing the patience, compassion, and individualized support she provides daily. Families describe her as universally loved, someone who takes extra time to forge meaningful connections and ensure each student feels valued and capable.

Danielle’s contributions directly align with HBCSD’s focus on Academic Achievement, Supportive School Environments, and Engaged Community. Her resourcefulness, care, and dedication make her classroom a place where students thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. She reflects the District’s purpose in action every day.

Diego Mata – Lead Groundskeeper, Grounds Department

With an eye for detail and a deep sense of pride in his work, Diego Mata plays an essential role in creating safe, beautiful, and welcoming school grounds for students, staff, and families. As Lead Groundskeeper, Diego demonstrates responsibility, resourcefulness, and global consciousness in everything he does.

His colleagues describe him as professional, reliable, and consistently kind, someone who elevates the work of the entire team and consistently seeks ways to improve the appearance and functionality of school sites. One colleague highlighted his thoughtfulness during a recent tree-planting at Smith Elementary, where Diego had the idea to capture a group photo to commemorate the moment, an example of how he brings connection and pride to his work.

Another nominator shared that Diego “has a great impact on his colleagues and school community on a daily basis” and is not only a strong leader, but a valued teammate and friend. His efforts support the District’s dedication to Supportive School Environments and Engaged Community, ensuring that each campus feels cared for and inviting.
This month’s honorees exemplify what makes HBCSD such a special place: dedicated employees who show up each day with heart, expertise, and a commitment to students and school communities.
