HBCSD Celebrates October Shoreline Standouts: Xuan Nguyen, Emily Lamas, and Danielle Gilliland

The Huntington Beach City School District is proud to honor Xuan Nguyen, Emily Lamas, and Danielle Gilliland as the October Shoreline Standouts, recognizing team members who exemplify the District’s core values and commitment to excellence.

Each month, the Shoreline Standouts program celebrates employees who go above and beyond to support HBCSD’s mission of empowering all learners to achieve their full potential. Honorees are selected for their dedication to District goals, demonstration of the HBCSD Learner Profile traits, and the positive impact they make on students, colleagues, and the community.

Xuan Nguyen – Transportation Department

As a dedicated bus driver, Xuan Nguyen consistently brings positivity, calmness, and care to every interaction. Known for his reliability and resourcefulness, he ensures students begin and end their school days safely and with a smile. Whether it’s stepping in to assist colleagues, maintaining his bus with exceptional care, or volunteering for additional routes, Xuan embodies the District’s focus on Supportive School Environments and Responsible Use of Resources. His professionalism and kind demeanor help foster a culture of trust and teamwork across the transportation department.

His colleagues describe him as dependable and selfless:

“Xuan is someone I can always count on. He shows up, does his job with dedication, and never hesitates to step in wherever help is needed. He consistently goes above and beyond without complaint, and his caring, respectful, and responsible nature makes him an outstanding asset to the Transportation department.”

Another nomination highlighted his generosity and kindness:

“Xuan is always willing to go the extra mile to help his colleagues, students, and the District. He exemplifies the caring trait of our Learner Profile and ensures students start their day with a warm smile and a safe environment.”

Emily Lamas – Health Clerk, Dwyer

At Dwyer Middle School, Emily Lamas is much more than a health clerk, she’s a compassionate leader who creates a welcoming, safe space for every student. Known for her empathy and initiative, she mentors students and offers a listening ear to those who need it most. Her efforts reflect the District’s goals of a Supportive School Environment, Engaged Community, and Leadership Development, as well as the Learner Profile traits of being Caring, Responsible, and Globally Conscious.

Her nominator described her impact beautifully:

“Mrs. Emily has had a significant and lasting impact on the students, staff, and overall community at Dwyer Middle School. She provides more than just medical support—she offers kindness, empathy, and reassurance to every student who walks through her door. Her calm and caring nature helps students feel safe, supported, and understood, even on their toughest days.”

Another staff member added:

“Among her colleagues, Mrs. Emily is known for her professionalism, dependability, and genuine heart for service. Her positive attitude and quiet dedication have made her an invaluable part of the Dwyer Middle School community.”

Danielle Gilliland – Specialized Academic Instruction Teacher

Danielle Gilliland brings warmth, creativity, and compassion to her work as an Education Specialist. Her individualized approach ensures students feel seen, supported, and capable of success. Known for her positivity and resourcefulness, she finds unique ways to engage students, such as offering hands-on projects that spark excitement and confidence. Danielle embodies HBCSD’s focus on Academic Achievement and Supportive School Environments, and her commitment to the Learner Profile traits of being Resourceful, Caring, and Responsible shines through in everything she does.

A parent shared a heartfelt nomination highlighting her impact:

“My son was really struggling to do any kind of project in ELA. Ms. Gil went out of her way to find something that would get him excited—she offered to help him 3D print his project and supported him through the process. She just went above and beyond with an attitude of help and not criticism. I think she makes students feel safe and understood.”

Each honoree was recognized with a Shoreline Standouts collector’s coin and a certificate of recognition as a token of appreciation for their outstanding contributions.
